The most successful teams are built on several principles. Confidence is one of those principles. When we “own our confidence” we show up as a better leader, whether that is as a parent or at work with our teams. Confidence shows up. People recognize whether you have it or you don’t and today we are going to share with you how you can build that confidence.
A team that lacks confidence will not be as effective or productive…nobody wants a team like that! You want a team that is intentional and has phenomenal success together! We want to know that we can count on each other and that we are working together in a positive way.
When we say team, we mean whether that is at work or if that is home…these principles and Ideals work for BOTH!
Here are 3 Ideals of “How to Build Confidence in Your Team”.
Ideal #1 – Celebrate
You want to Celebrate all successes, big and small! Think about potty training. Whether you are training a young child or perhaps a puppy…. You will get there better and faster when you celebrate and cheer on that toddler or that pet. Celebrating successes both big and small gets us in “accomplishment mentality”. This allows you to stay out of the “failure mentality or this is too hard mentality”. Accomplishment mentality gives you proof that you are accomplishing great things and keeps you feeling confident in what you are doing, therefore building your confidence in yourself. You want to get your team in “accomplishment mentality” and keep them there!
I had a coach, and every week we had a team meeting. We got to share two successes and one big fat fail. This allowed everyone to have two great things that they could celebrate for the week and then recognize the thing that did not go so great. You can call it whatever you want…a swing and a miss, an oopsie daisy. When we did
this, it allowed everyone to be able to put it out there in a safe place knowing that when you are working on a team, whether at work or in your family at home…everyone already knows about the screw up and are creating their own ideas around it. We are far better at recognizing our shortcomings and getting back on track than obsessing on what others may be thinking or even using excuses and blaming others.
Come up with ways to Celebrate with your team. When we stop pointing fingers and have no blame game, just ownership, it reinforces that it is ok to not be perfect. This raises integrity and confidence while building a stronger relationship that is built on trust.
When was the last time that it was ok to acknowledge your flub up? This should be allowed, and it will grow confidence!
Ideal #2 – Acknowledgement
Everyone has the innate need to belong. One of the best ways to feel that you belong in a group is to be able to share your opinion and ideas without feeling judged or shamed. When we acknowledge all ideas and opinions and do it without judgment or shutting them down, we are allowing them a shelf life to at least be considered. This opens the opportunity to be heard, valued, and included. It allows people to feel that they belong, and they have value to contribute. Plus, it breeds creativity. Even a bad idea will spur on everyone to other ideas. Even when you do not use an idea, give them a thank you and gratitude for their contribution.
The best way to do this is to ask GOOD questions, such as: How do you see this working or why would that be a better way to handle this or what complications can you see or when would that be a good option to implement? GOOD Questions will eliminate bad ideas, but not shut down the person from wanting to share their input.
Ideal #3 – Recognition & Appreciation
Everyone thrives on good recognition and appreciation. When we recognize team or family members for what they ARE doing, not just where they are falling short, they do more of the things they are being recognized for. We get to show appreciation for each person on a regular basis. When we do this regularly, it will build relationships and bonds that are incredibly strong.
In the video this week we share a story of how a manager of a team with Verizon Wireless deals with this and does a phenomenal job. (Even after we had a lousy experience with customer service with several failed attempts, and then we got a good experience.)
As you recognize and appreciate others, you will see confidence grow. You can watch a person’s demeanor and see just how effective this is in raising confidence! Your team or family will thrive as you learn to use this on a regular basis and your confidence levels will soar!
Watch our video “How to Build Confidence in Your Team” and reap the rewards! If you implement this immediately, this truly will raise your confidence levels more than you can even imagine!
